Why Your RV Refrigerator Might Be Warm and How to Fix It
Whether you just turned on your refrigerator or arrived at your campsite, a warm refrigerator can be frustrating. Here are some common reasons why your RV refrigerator might stop working and what you can do about it.
1. Low Battery Voltage
Some refrigerators have a safety feature that triggers when the RV's battery voltage drops too low. In this safe mode, the refrigerator halts to prevent further battery drain. If this happens, turn off the refrigerator, wait about five minutes, then turn it back on.
2. Propane System Issues
If the propane portion of your refrigerator isn’t functioning correctly, it’s often due to a control board issue. Fortunately, these control boards are usually not too expensive and relatively easy for a technician to replace.
3. Burnt-Out Compressor
A compressor failure usually means the entire refrigerator needs replacing. This is a more serious problem and typically requires professional repair or replacement.
Parts That Are Usually Replaceable
The main parts of a refrigerator that can be replaced are the control board and some propane components.
Environmental Factors and Refrigerator Failures
A common cause of refrigerator failure is operating in extreme environmental conditions. The refrigeration system removes heat from inside the unit, which needs to be expelled somewhere—inside the camper. If the camper’s ambient temperature exceeds 100°F, the heat has nowhere to go, causing the compressor and other components to overheat. Prolonged high temperatures can lead to component failure or compressor burnout.
Proactive Tips
To help prevent this, consider turning on the refrigerator a day before you need it to be cool, or run the camper’s air conditioning to keep interior temperatures below 80°F while the refrigerator is operating.
